I take it you're saving this Ashley log for YEEEEEEEARS down the road when you'll need it?

Well but of course I am saving it, putting in a vault, sealing it up, and then maybe, maybe one day, years down the road, I will need this.

Try checking your x windows set up. It might have set it up to 24 bit color (which is the default, and stupidily...) your monitor/gfx card might not support 24 bit, and only support 16 or 32. Due to the age of the machine, I say go ahead and set it to 24 and see if that is the problem...

That worked fantasticly. Thanks, you're right, the default for that was 24bit + 8 bit alpha. Set it to 16 and it works great. A little slow, but what do you expect from a 266 right?

Glad to be of help ;) I love linux (actually a big Mac OS X user) and little things like that annoy me on the desktop side of the linux world. Setting up servers I rarely ever use X, but that one little thing annoys the living HELL out of me because I always forget to set it.
